Kostas Kosmatos

Associate Professor at the Law School of the
Democritus University of Thrace

Kostas Kosmatos was born in Athens in 1967 and since he 1986 lives in Thessaloniki. He is a graduate of the AUTH School of Law (1991), with a Master’s Degree in Criminal and Forensic Sciences (1993) and a Doctorate in Law from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1996).

Since 1993 he has been a lawyer at the Thessaloniki Bar Association (“Supreme Court” since 2004), with exclusive involvement in criminal law cases at all levels of jurisdiction, with particular expertise in the appellate proceedings before the criminal divisions of the Supreme Court.

In 2013, he was awarded from the Hellenic Criminal Bar Association, discrimination “for morality and ability in the exercise of his function and to contribute to the promotion of criminal science”.

Since 2002 he has been teaching at the Law School of the Democritus University of Thrace and since 2022 as an Associate Professor of the Department of Criminal and Forensic Sciences in the field of Criminology.

He has also been teaching the course “Special Criminal Laws III – Drugs” at the National School of Judges (Directorate of Prosecutors) since 2017.

He was (March 2015 – August 2016) Secretary General of the Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights.

He has participated in several Legislative Committees and Working Groups. He is a member of several scientific associations.

He has participated as a Speaker in several Conferences, Workshops and Seminars.

He has an intense writing activity with books, scientific articles and studies in legal journals and collective books.
